Man have I been busy. I did start 6 varieties this year. I'm trying a new method to spread then out and new weed stop. Hoping to have 50 Small Stalk Black Mammoth this year and at least 20 of the other 5 but that's pretty ambitious for me.
The orange sticks are 4' from each other. Hope my SSBM likes the room

Something went wrong. The 28 SSBM I had in died. Well all but 2, they have been sitting out all day for 3 weeks in the 48 cell starters. Roots were good and long. Stalks were short. I didn't have time to give them a trim this year.

The milk jugs seem to offer more than sun protection. Bug protection and a slight greenhouse effect. I didn't put them over at first because they have been hardened but that I think was my mistake

Ok I finally resorted to chemical warfare with the grasshoppers. I sprayed seven on the perimeter of the garden and throughout the yard. Then I spread seven granular through the yard. I went out and they had almost stripped my grape leaves. Between that and only a few tobacco are surviving I knew I had to lower the hopper population quickly.

I didn't give my seedlings any fertilizer this year so they were too weak. A costly oversight due to too busy and too tired this year. I'll still come out with about 22 although one is already showing sign of clay compaction/ malnutrition I'm considering digging it out and moving it.

On another note my common milkweed is showing flowers this year. Only have 5-6 so I need lots more. For anyone wondering milkweed is the only thing monarch butterflies eat so I'm trying to make a nice patch hoping to see some.

My raspberries are taking off with a vengeance I have to move several other plants before the raspberries choke them out. There is 3 rhubarb, a patch of daylilies, and 4 shrubs for sure. I'll have to watch out for that blueberry. I thought it was a goner last year but it looks okay this year so I'll have to keep those raspberries back, and grasshoppers. I knew this about raspberries so it's not a surprise or anything. I put some blackberries in last fall and those came back. Grasshoppers stripped them last year so I wasn't sure. I guess I need to take pictures so I'll put them on the next post.

Very small survival. I think 20 all together. The Isleta Pueblo is really short but doing OK. I have 6 of those. The 3 SSBM is still short but leafing out nicely. I have 2 Black Sea Samsun. 3 Walkers Broadleaf probably my tallest. 2 Baiano that are tall also. 6 American 63 very short. I've bolstered there acid fertilizer hoping they jump quickly. I got 60 days tops and it seems they grow a little slower for me.

Well, I got hail when I wasn't home. There was 2 or 3 that I was starting to think about topping. About 90% total loss. I salvaged what I could but even those were shot to dollrags.

Not a lot. What is there isn't mature. I'll see what color cure does.

I cut out the background so it's easier to see. I think

Before the hail.

Here my paw under that leaf. It's about 16"X 12" , no hopper damage. I was so excited.

In the 12 years of the FTT forum's existence, this year has seen more reports of hail damage than I can recall. The formation of hail requires more energy in the lower atmosphere than do rainstorms or even simple thunderstorms. Throughout the US, as well as elsewhere, the lower atmosphere is unusually energized.

Sorry for your lost crop @Robncars , I had the same happening. Five hail storms in 4 weeks and all that remains of my baccy looks like trashed and overcooked spinach mixed with dirt. A bit depressing, to be honest.

I agree. It hurt my feelings pretty bad. But the rags that I put in the flue chamber are turning yellow so there's that
