My perique blends sampler is 3 jars short of a case, so for the next three nights I guess I've got to come up with my own perique blends to round it out. Tonight's attempt was...

Lemon VA 3/16
Bright VA 5/16
Dark Air Cured 2/16
TN Dark Fire Cured 2/16
Perique 4/16

Flavor was great...good amount of sweetness, some smokeyness. Balance was towards the back of the mouth. Definitely quite strong. Towards last third of the bowl I needed quite a few relights. I think I might try inverting the lemon and bright amounts in the future. Name TBD.

I’ve got a couple of blocks of WLT Ripe Virginia pressing right now under different conditions to check out the results. When my molds free up I think I’m going to press a block of Exmoor as my first choice from Bob’s recipes. As I’ve been reading past posts, I’ve got to say thanks for such wonderful contributions of your expertise Bob!

Right now I’m smoking HU Dockworker from 2016 in a Butz Choquin Origine.

Let us know how that ripe VA turns out. I asked for a sample of it with my last order, but got a sample of an American Turkish mix instead. So I'm still curious what it's like.

I've had a 4 oz plug of Exmoor in the press for about 3 weeks now. Probably time to pull it out soon. I'll share some pictures when I get around to slicing it up. It's already a great blend as a ribbon mix, and my expectations for a flake are high.

I decided to call that one "Last Knight". Tonight's mix is called "Knight's Delight"...I may be working on a theme here

VA Bright 6/16
Dark Air 4/16
Izmir 2/16
Perique 4/16

Right out of the gate I'm loving this one. I'm finding overall for my last bowl of the evening I enjoy a more alkaline balance.

I took a plug of Exmoor out of the press this morning. I made it by weighing out the leaf to make 100 grams, then spritzing with water to get it into medium-high case before loading it up and pressing for 3-4 weeks. The oriental component is Samsun.

It weighs 110 grams straight out of the press. 4" x 1 5/8" x 7/8". Once cut, the flakes don't want to stay together 100% because I used no glue. Pictures to follow below.

I crammed some into a pipe without rubbing it out, and lit it up. It's the smoothest, roundest, full-bodiedest, full-flavoredest smoke. All the aroma is there, but there is a lot less edge compared to the ribbon mixture version. I expected the nicotine to be substantial, but it still somehow managed to sneak up on me.

Although it has the same ingredients as the ribbon cut mixture, this flake is different. I really like it.

I’ve been smoking the WLT Ripe Flue Cured Virginia that I pressed and sliced into flakes. They just came out of the molds today after three days of pressing, so obviously no age on them. One I pressed at a constant 90 degrees, (on the left) and one at room temperature (68 degrees) Leaf only misted with water prior to pressing, no other casing or treatment. It’s very nice at this early stage. I’ve been smoking it in a cob and a TV churchwarden. I have the feeling that I will end up making some tasty blends with this leaf.

That’s very pretty! I just pressed a block of Exmoor myself this evening, so it will be a little bit before I get to try it, but your post has me looking forward to it even more!

I’ve got it in my mind to come up with a Virginia Flake, which is my most smoked style of tobacco and I have been experimenting with mixing loose blends. I think I’ve got one worth running with for now, which I am smoking right now.

3% Burley red tips
3% Perique
20% Lemon VA
74% Ripe VA

The smoke is in the ballpark of a deeper/fuller (and better to me) version of OGS, not sure how else to describe it. I’m going to press two test blocks of it tomorrow when my Exmoor comes out. One uncased and one with a light casing of an apricot extract I made.

I’m smoking it in a TV churchwarden, which is a regular favorite for Virginias for me.

Smoking the third perique blend to finish off my case. Quite nice. Doesn't burn great but flavor is really working for me.

Turkish Knight
Izmir 6/16
Samsun 2/16
Perique 4/16
Dark Air 4/16

Sprinkled in some VA Lemon on the top of the bowl because it was left on my packing plate from earlier in the day.
