Some more Autumn Evening in an estate Dr. Grabow bulldog.

It still sucks. I cannot imagine why people seem to like this stuff, it’s an abomination - and this from a guy who still enjoys a little 1-Q on occasion.

A little bone-dry crumbled leaf of my 2023 Samsun leaf, all by itself. It’s not terrible. With that done, I decided to try a little of the VA that’s been in a box, also so dry it disintegrates when I touch it. There’s a bit of bite, but it’s not terrible either. I may need to re-hydrate this stuff and press another flake of pure VA. This little bit of leaf tasted better than the stuff I pressed last winter.

Right now I’m smoking some Turbo Classic 1 dokha. Black 2 would have been a”a nicer choice for comparison, but I was digging through my stash and saw I had 4 bottles (3 unopened) of this blend… it’s not gonna smoke itself.

The comparison is to:
Lot 1 - a few different mixtures of (all sun cured and un-aged/un-kilned from this year’s crop) Little Dutch, Symbol 4, and Yellow gold. And,
Lot 2 - combinations of last year’s towel cured and naturally aged Prilep, Little Dutch, and 2022’s air cured YTB.

Every batch of Lot 1 was far smoother than Lot 2, though Lot 2 wasn’t bad -just not as smooth. Lot 1 is every bit as smooth as the mass produced Turbo. One combo from lot 1 (~50/50 Little Dutch and Symbol 4) was far more potent than the Turbo C1 (which is what you’re looking for in a Dokha).

Given how simple the sun curing was compared to towel curing (in my dry environment, anyway) I think I will continue on with that method from now on. Kudos to Bob and CV’s threads for leading me down that path!

The fall is bringing out a desire for Latakia in me. Not sure where I’ll be going with it yet. I haven’t tried blending any Latakia blends myself before, but it seems like it may be time. For now, I’m smoking Solent Mixture in an Orlik calabash.

As today, Greek soldiers, Constables and EON Youth stand-fight-counterattack and win against the insidious invaders:

Some of my own VA flake from last year’s leaf. I pressed and cut this last December, and until now it’s been quite harsh. It’s still got some way to go, but it’s actually getting close to a decent straight Virginia. Just wish I’d been able to slice it thinner; the cut it is 2-3 times as wide as I’d like. I have a good sized tub of leaf left, I think I’ll press some more like this.

The first Hellenic Air Force "Kamikaze" pilots

Sergeant Grigorios Valkanas, 18 November 1940

During an air combat with italian bombers and pursuit aircrafts and after run out of his ammunition, he noticed that an enemy aircraft had escaped and was heading towards city of Korytsa to bomb the Greek positions. With sacrifice and trying with suicidal way to prevent this like the Spartans in Thermopylae, he fell onto the enemy aircraft and together with it he fell to the ground and was killed.

Lieutenant Colonel Marinos Mitralexis , 2 November 1940

During the air battles found that his ammunition was saved he saw that an italian bomber was heading to bomb civilians in Thessaloniki, he swarm to it and with his engine propeller hit it's the tail and shot it down. Despite the serious damage suffered by the propeller of his plane, he managed to land it in a field, at the point where the crew of the downed Italian bomber had landed with their parachutes a little earlier. Immediately asked the villagers where they were then drew his revolver and he arrested 3 of them (the pilot had been killed in the crash). During the German occupation, he escaped to the Middle East, where he continued his military activity but unfortunately was killed in action due to engine failure in 1948 in the Aegean sea.

I am smoking Torben Dansk Black Cavendish (ohne flavour) in a Fallion, double Greek coffee beside me.

50/50 mix of Sutliff Sobranie match, with my own VA flake from last year. Not bad at all! It was a happy accident. Went to fill a pipe from the little jar of the Sutliff I had in the garage, and there was only about half a bowl. I mixed in my own leaf and the result was quite nice. I smoked it in the Ropp cherrywood.

An unmarked meerschaum I've been told looks like an Ismet Bekler piece, and had I known that I may have left it unsmoked. But now that it's seen at least a couple dozen smokes it may as well keep doing its job. Right now its job is to make me smell like cinnamon rolls
