Very impressive lists. Thanks for posting.

Papante and Sacred Cornplanter are both N. tabacum, not N. rustica.

Bob

EDIT: THIS IS INCORRECT. PLEASE SEE BELOW.

Very nice list you have there madhouse ! Did you grow N. glauca (tree tobacco) there ? It's a perennial plant (while most of the Nicotianas are annual), so did it survive during the winter in your country ? I want to grow a single one for ornamental purpose but I'm not sure if it can manage winter conditions here.

Thanks deluxestogie for the heads up, should have taken more notice when typing  Istanbulin i am yet to find out if N. glauca (tree tobacco) will survive or winters in the UK although i have read they are very hardy so fingers crossed, i collected the seed on holiday on top of a volcano in lanzarote it was a very healthy tree and im am afraid it gave up all its seed when every one else was having lunch but i have set the seed and they germinated just fine i have 3 small plants in pots in the garden which will be moved indoors this winter.

What's on your wish list? Or is your wish list what you don't have. I'm interested in the Nicotiana glauca, Just to grow it. Small Stalk Black Mammoth, & Aztec . I don't see Havana 211, Yellow Orinoco, Havana k-2, Metacomet, or petite Havana. I have those awaiting germination test still two months away.

Papante is a tobaccum but Sacred Cornplanter definitely a Rustica. Perhaps you are thinking of Mt Pima?

workhorse_01,... I have a few of the things you want, and I want a few of the things on that list of yours you sent me the other day. I'll send you a message later.

Thanks Sky i think i will have a look into these two a bit deeper, Ok did that and Sacred Cornplanter definitely seems to be Rustica but Papante looks like it is classified as Rustica but bears traits more akin to N. tabacum in this respect i would think its a similar looking plant too Red Russian with has habit like N. tabacum but leafs have a Rustica look about them i can only assume the deciding factor here is the amount of chromosomes they carried, N. rustica has only 24 chromosomes, while N. tabacum has 48 chromosomes ?.

Hi workhorse_01 yes you are correct (Or is your wish list what you don't have) its an ongoing process collecting seed and building a viable seed bank in the uk. I'll sen you a PM.

You are correct. Sacred Cornplanter is definitely N. rustica, and it is Mt. Pima that was rattling in my fuzzy brain.

So...to clarify my previous erroneous statement:
  • Papante: N. tabacum
  • Mt. Pima: N. tabacum
  • Sacred Cornplanter: DEFINITELY N. rustica
Sorry for adding to the confusion. In my 2012 grow log, I discuss my crossing experiment which proved these assertions.

No prob's Bob i like the fact i was questioned just helps to keep me on top of it, so is it possible for Rustica to cross Tabacum or is it a 1-1000 shoot and i wonder if it was possible would the resulting progeny be able too produce viable seed i only ask this as there seems to be some strains that have a decidedly Rustica look about them but taller usually and flower shapes tend to be more like Tabacum.

I don't think it is possible for Rusticas to cross to Tabacums but it is possible the other way, though unlikely to occur naturally.

UPDATE 2 - 10 NOV

Hi All
Well it’s been a long time coming but all seed is in and tested now apart from Variegata which seems to be somewhat unreliable in colouration so this strain needs more testing next year.

Moldavian-456 is very low and I mean very low as I I only had two plants survive this year, I still have one young plant indoors so I suspect there will be more seed early next year, so first come first surved and probably only 20 seeds each for this one.

I have been in touch with a friend in the UK that has grown
Tree Tobacco - Nicotiana glauca for a couple of years now here and it seems to be quite happy outside in the ground so cold weather does not seem to upset it that much, Everything else is good and ready to go, hope you all had a great season and drop me a line if there is anything you need.

Thank's Mark it's not been too bad but hard work, most of the plants have done very well, some flowered a bit late and seemed to have no rhyme or reason when they flowered, main culprit Silver River, some flowered early spring some late summer ??? But I do love this plant it looks great and smokes great, I think my favourites for this year were Silver River, North Caroline NC-82, Galician original, Bolivian Criollo Black or were they ? I don’t know I think there all great, I wonder if anyone else has any favourites.
