Those look great! Which one of those did I step on? Keep good notes, I want to try doing sprouts in a bed next year.

Re: BarG 2013 grow log

I can take a crowbar and stick it in the ground as deep as needed so the tap root can go full depth. The perique looked even better, more woody with some real nice branchs. I want to make next years bed so when the plants are ready you can maybe just give em a tug and it comes out. And, I was thinking of using the #600 seed sifter screen to help distribute seed with some sand so they aren't bunched together. If you want x amount of plants put extra seeds for duds and replacements.

The greenhouse was great compared to without it, and for varietys with small amounts, but the seedbed would be much less labor if I'm doing a large quantity in a few varietys.

I'm 6-8 weeks ahead of last year workhorse but the last frost a week ago almost got me! It put some damage to some leaves but the plants were fine.
Those garden sprouts survived 3 frosts one was a pretty good one, killed off a lot of veggies.

That was a Ct. broadleaf Leverhead, I only need a few of those.

As far as I could tell the damage to the roots was minimal, They separated surprisingly easy. I only used the best ones for the most part. Use a shower setting on the hose nozzle and spray the dirt away and tease them apart. I have quite a few set a week or 2 ago with only 3-4" roots and they all survived and are taking off now. They are still far behind my greenhouse bursa but the perique are ahead of the greenhouse perique. Go figure, I think I had to adjust my medium and restart the perique, they were slower to germinate.

I was thinking of 1/2 ton of blasting sand for the bed, it would be easier to get the seedlings out without damage. With the same kind of fertilizer mix I'm using now. It would be cheaper than the Peat/Vermiculite mix I'm using now.

;)I was thinking the miracle grow seed start by itself or mixed with peat, vermiculite and pearlite. I want to try some other than the potting miracle grow. maybe with two separate covers, one with plastic for rain and cold and one with 15% shade cloth if needed to help keep from drying out the lighter soil after well germinated or bad frost. Maybe a couple of 1"pvc with holes drilled set in bottom for watering with a couple 90's for uprights to add water or liquid fert. A really small area would do an awful lot of seedlings. You could use a 5 gallon bucket and do 50 to a hundred plants the way my seeds were broadcast for this experiment with the same results probably.

For those without their own access to blasting sand, play sand for kids is of fine, even sized grain and available at Lowe's, etc. in bags.

I really like this think I'll give it a try next year. Seen a vid on Youtube a Cuban grower was using a coffee can had seeds mixed with sterilized white ash and a bunch of small holes in the bottom of the can like a big salt shaker.
Used it to spread the seeds even and the ash was so they could see the seeds. It coated them so they could be seen against the starting mix.

The 3 double rows in foreground are Bursa. I found that the bare root transplants need to be pruned before full sun hits for extended amount of time to help prevent wilting.

Maryland 609, Virginia bright leaf,Southern beautys,YTB,Silk leaf,Perique and several cigar varietys started

My shade patch with several different varietys, primarily Ct. Shade and Dixie shade. I started preparation on this patch last spring removing roots from sapling trees previously cleared. Cut worms took a huge toll here and a lot of plants had to be replaced.

My mian patch is fresh ground also and a lot of leaves right at ground level are shot through with slug holes, they won't be saved anyway. but I will start the BT today because the hornworms and loopers have found me. The BT also seemed to stop the cutworm problem, I hope anyway.

The main patch will be all flat by the end of the season. After tilling I roll the tiller where I want my row lifting up the bades and plant between the wheel ruts. The green thing is a bucket and ladle for watering transplants. Theres a lot of trees around the shade patch so I built the rows high to keep above any deep tree roots that may still be underneath.
