Re: Fisherman's grow blog

Very nice read on plant and seed selection... Deals with graded seeds producing best seedlings etc.

"Darwin found that self-fertilized tobacco seed produced plants superior
to seed cross-fertilized within the variety, and accounted for this
condition by supposing that this species is similar to the common pea
and a few other exotic plants whic^ have been self-fertilized for miany
generations."

I still think you need a Burley for a good cigarette mix. Cherry Red is another flue cure and I think the others are Orientals.

See if they all do that or if an anomily. Quit fertilizing. just a suggestion, founded on a fu-ck up. You may not be able to smoke your rewards with to much experimenting.

I bet you would be surprised if you took a soil sample from a bucket and had it tested at A&M or where your area uses.

Isnt much fertilizer at all. I have been holding off until I could find the ph. Mainly only epsom salts and iron. Ph meter from bluelabs in mail somewhere in north texas.
I think i used full strength miracle grow once and 1/4 2 times.

I think I have some coming. Trying another seller this time too.
My leaf came in mail but injector is a day or so behind. Used a gillitine papercutter to slice up the lemon and the turkish... It took dam near an hour tho to pull them lill stems out..
Was risky pushing them lil leaves thru that cutter too. Good thing I have thick fingernails :)

I'm sorry, I thought you were using "stuff" I called fertlizer. Yours are budding early though and that was my concern.

No, I haven't even used any organics either. I do have some manure tea made up but after the incidents with the yellow leaves and/or the over watering I held off. And naturally it rained like 75% of the time since i dryed out the gutters. The bags are even soaked. Some of the buckets are dry finally due to the leaves not letting any rain into them and I flooded one gutter again just to see. Some of the bags need fertilizer as they are classic yellow all the way down to bottom and not just the bud leaves. These i did fertilize the other day and got good greening responce. Maybe the rain got the soil mix to release it's lime and letting plant take up what it needs. I'm thinking the soil mix is really acid.

Try a ph meter. I tested my soil once ,last year and ended up planting in different area. The soil tested was well within ph .

With the amount of plants you have you will have a lot. If you experiment with stuff do some research so you don't affect the way your plants cure and smoke. Tried and true won't make you blue.

Its just like growing other stuff ;but different:cool:

Fisherman did you start your plants under grow lights? I have a friend who grows other things inside under Intense grow lights and he says if you grow plants on a twenty four hour light cycle for too long you will trick the plant into budding and that's all it wants to do. I don't know this for sure because I don't use lights. I start mine in the sun and bring them in and take them out until I transplant them to the plot. This way there's no hardening off for mine.

Workhorse,
I did use lites.... floresent and 24/7. And over watered I am sure also.... It isnt all of them flowering but a few random at the moment. Another cause of some plants flowering is to root bound them. They aren't root bound in the buckets yet but spent some time in the solo cups when you could see the roots growing daily. Of course tobacco roots grow as fast or faster at times than their topside do :)

I posted a report/link about light affecting tobacco and it mentions some being light positive and some not. Also fertilizer being culprit. Im gonna bag the first ones and let a bottom sucker grow out maybe . They have about 18 leaves DEPENDING on how any around the bud are real leaves or not so they aren't total loss. If they all do flower this week or so I will top all the lil bastids :)

But I wont be doing the 24/7 thing with the lite after they sprout next time and for the ones I am sprouting now I will also move outdoors as soon as they are up good as well as putting the fertilizer to them earlier tho 1/4 strength as advised..

Catterton Tobacco
Golden Burley Tobacco
Mohawk Tobacco
Connecticut Broadleaf Tobacco
Kelly Burley Tobacco
One Sucker Tobacco

And 2 more from lil dealer that caught eye but only burley and onesucker will be planted for blending. Others just for seeds .

I got my whole leaf the other day and have had a new world opened for me. That lemon smells dang good and I now know what to expect as for texture , case, and of course smell and as soon as my machine comes I will know about taste as well. Dang I hope Uncle Sam can make it without my cig tax's ;)

As long as your season is there if you do grow a sucker crop you'll do fine. My sucker crops put me over the top last year. The winter was so mild they just kept growing and growing.. By the third sucker they tend to get a little bland. But for snuff they still work as all of it starts as flour anyway. If I were you I probably would be a little hesitant about saving seed from early bloomers. Good luck though!

They'll grow some more after topping, and the leaves will get alot bigger. I would top the early bloomers so you don't end up with that as a trait. I would wait and bag the plant that not only is one of the better looking, but also holds true to type for the variety you are growing. As many as you are growing, most will hold true to type and you'll be able to tell them from the ones that don't. Bag your best looking one or two that hold true to type. Thank you Bob and Paul for the above info.
