I'm sure it's possible, but not practical for more than a token number of plants. Plus, you'll have to hand-pollinate, if you want to make seed.

I dont think its possible with flourescent lights..they dont put out enough lumens..now a h.i.d. light it is totally possible..a 400 watt setup would do it..but the heat a h.i.d. puts off is intense...so youd have to exaust the heat..

Very possible to use a florescent lights but your yield will not be very high verse cost. If you use a MH or HPS you can grow mature tobacco plants that yield a little better per watt but you will be limited by the space that the light covers so still not alot of yield verses cost. If your intentions are to play around and experiment and have fun then I would say why not try .

light tracks make lights do a lot bigger area and eliminate the hot spot. i play around with 2 400 watt switchable ballast lights so you only change the bulbs and flick a switch for mh for grow and hps for flowering, fruiting.

"" light tracks""...someone is going high teck with thier grow lights..

It would seem like a bacca plant wouldnt need a h.p.s. bulb on them

I got 2 ...400's. Just sitting dormant...i dont think the yield would constitute the cost of running them.

Chicken I agree with you that it is expensive and not worth the money to do as for growing tobacco to smoke, but with a 400 watt hps you can move the light way away from the tobacco to act like shade cloth would. The advantage to a higher lumen light is that it will cover a great space. With a 6 to 10 foot rail you can cover quite a bit of square footage to try and make some wrapper with a little more control over the environment that the tobacco is grown in might give interesting results. I love the sun and it is free so it is what I mainly use but I enjoy manipulating plants and animals to see what I can change or alter. And this is much easier to test with more control over the environment so lights become necessary. Less variables makes it easier for me to see changes that take place, or at least to know why the changes happened so that I can repeat the results if I decide to.

i start my tobacco, tomatoes and peppers under florescents for about a month then move them under the 400 watt hoods until they go outside with peppers and tomatoes already on most plants for a small early harvest. some winters i run 2 american hydroponics flood tables with some herbs, vegetables and a few potted flowers that i rotate upstairs for a few days then switch out for another one so there are always fresh blooms on the kitchen table.

i agree with you.. as far as growing cigar strains.. the plant needs so much special attention to turn out the perfect leaf.

my cigar rolling sucks.. or i havent had the correct type of leaves yet..i see some of you guys sticks. and wonder what they are like,

after this years attempt, at using flourescents. to start things. next year im either going with a greenhouse. or i may run both of my h.i.d.'s

because i too like to start '' everything '' around january.. from bacca to most of what my garden will be.

this year im so off schedule as far as my bacca is concerned. i got some 2' tall and others still in thier seed trays. with the use of those h.i.d.'s i could proablly get all my plants the same age. and put all of them out at the same time.

i got proablly 30 left to grow till big enough to go outside, and a couple hundred allready planted,

one of my 400 ballast is real old school... it is not digital... its ballast looks just like a huge 20 lb ballast that a tube flourescent has... its m.h. only.
