Definitely my last clipping on the remaining tobacco. I'm hoping to put them out next week.

The Chilhuacle Negro peppers will need to await warmer soil temps—maybe mid-May. I have 8 Xanthi-Yaka 18a in reserve, to replace transplant mortality. I'm already thinking of what to do with the leftovers.

After heavy rains, my newly transplanted Xanthi-Yaka 18a looks fairly healthy. They'll have to solve their own problem of growing upward. They're still young and flexible.

I rather enjoy going out to the garden, with my only required labor being that of lifting a finger (only one finger) onto the camera shutter button.

Often when my temp dips into the upper 30s (°F), if the wind is still, then the low temp falls down to the dew point (upper green squiggle). Although it will be breezy on those two cold nights (red circles), which will minimize the chance of frost, I'll just wait until Thursday to begin putting in the remainder of my garden—5½ beds of tobacco and another veggie bed. Temps are guaranteed to be wonderful for the rest of the summer. Meanwhile, I'll spread my 10-10-10 fertilizer to all of the beds.

With my wet weather, the slugs have had their best chance. The transplanted Xanthi-Yaka 18a showed hardly a nibble this afternoon.

It is 11 am. I'm sitting on my front porch. The sky is gray, with a light rain falling. I usually enjoy listening to the sounds of birds courting and bickering. Sometimes that is punctuated by the random snorts and grunts of cattle on the pasture across the road, or by the hoof thumps of deer jumping a fence somewhere out of my line of sight.

This morning, with few sounds other than the patter of rain on maple leaves, I have my notebook computer softly playing Willie Nelson's album, A Beautiful Time, on its tiny speakers. Willie just celebrated his 90th birthday—by performing on stage. He has been a background fixture during most of my life. Although my music preferences lean in a different direction, and I listen to mostly instrumental-only music (so that lyrics don't distract my mind from whatever I'm doing—wandering memories can consume a lot of time), Willie Nelson feels perfect for this otherwise gloomy day.

"Live every day like it's gonna be your last one, and one day you're gonna be right."

Dammit! I just now purchased Yo-Yo Ma Plays Ennio Morricone (Remastered). Rather lovely.

Bob
I was listening to the Essential Ennio Morricone with many of the soundtrack songs from the old spaghetti westerns, "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly", "Once Upon A Time in the West", "A Fistful of Dollars", etc. The harmonica Charles Bronson pretended to play behind the song "The Man With the Harmonica" is a really haunting melody.
You can listen to them for free on the free Youtube. I'm not a subscriber so I put up with a few ads.

I just noticed that the single, downloaded album of Ennio Morricone, that I purchased from Amazon comes to 14.3 GB on my computer disk. That would be a half-dozen DVDs. What on earth are they thinking? My 23 hours of Tangerine Dream albums total less than 1 GB.

Bob

EDIT: Time for eye surgery. That 14.3 GB is my entire digital music collection. The Ennio Morricone comes to a mere 98 MB.

I'll plant out the remainder of my tobacco varieties in two days. Meanwhile...

From YouTube, I downloaded just the audio of this complete The Best of Ennio Morricone - Ennio Morricone Greatest Hits Full Album 2021 - Film Music. It comes to about 1 hour and 22 minutes. The tracks are not separated and individually named. Just the equivalent of 3 albums of continuous music.

The Best of Ennio Morricone

Transplanting 36 Xanthi-Yaka 18a was a tedious job. With the threat of frost overnight, I located a scrap of Agribon-AG15 row cover, and laid it over the bed. It was anchored by a rock at each corner. (The risk of frost was the result of zero wind, so I didn't bother to anchor it more securely.)

Indeed, the temperature dropped to the dew point, and then some, registering at exactly 32.4°F (+0.22°C) at its coldest.

After removing the row cover today, the plants generally look good, though some of the small leaves were broken by my placement of the row cover.

Close inspection reveals a few leaf tips that showed frost damage, because they were apparently pressed firmly against the thin row cover.

I'll watch these. I have spares.

I just put 8 Tofta into their very own half-bed. Originally, I planned to put in only 4 Tofta, so I started 8 seedlings. No spares here.

As I was just about done, a buzzing column of bees swarmed closer and closer, getting to within about 8 feet. I made sure my long sleeves were pulled all the way down, picked up my transplanting things, and headed back to the house. Only one bee came too close (near my left ear), and was sent to meet her maker. I would have snapped a photo of the new Tofta bed, but decided the timing wasn't ideal. Maybee later.

Today, I transplanted 16 MD 609, 8 Vuelta Abajo and 8 Olor. For each 8 transplants, I carry a 1-gallon jug of water (with Imidacloprid added) from the house to the garden bed. It turns out to be easier than lugging a bucket with transplant water. This was followed by 2½ hours of mowing through the foot-tall lawn. At sunset, I went ahead and direct-seeded some Blue Ballet Hubbard and Boston Pickling Cukes, since the transplants of both were wiped out by frost.

If I have time prior to expected afternoon rain tomorrow, I will finish up with 16 Corojo 99, 16 Little Yellow and 16 NB-11 burley, and perhaps a photo. Grand total: 124 tobacco plants.

I'm sitting on the front porch, cooling down and resting, after transplanting 16 Little Yellow and 16 NB-11 burley. [My most significant computation is 1 pound of water carried for each tobacco plant.] I might be able to squeeze in the remaining 16 Corojo 99, if the predicted rain holds off. But I have to go by my body schedule, rather than the planting schedule. I would love to get it all done today.
