I finally got everything cleaned up and sprayed for what's looking like a week of hot and dry.

I think next year I'm going to leave some room for me.

It looks like that Houston gumbos treating you right leverhead. Lookin good.
I read that you can make a lighter tobacco darker by growing in a darker soil but you can't make a dark tobacco lighter by growing in a lighter colored soil. Talking about cured colors.

This patch is on some High (??) ground a little south of Conroe. The soil isn't anything like what I have to work with in Cypress (Gumbo). This stuff actually drains pretty well! As it dries out it gets a yellow cast to it from the iron in it. I don't know about color, I'll have to wait and see. I think I've got my curing "drum" about figured out, simplified a bunch of stuff. It could be pretty slick, or not. I hope I get it done before the tobacco catches up.

Conroes only about 20 miles south of Willis give or take. Its still Montgomery county. Heres an interesting article I found a year or so ago.

http://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/aft01

I think you will find it interesting.

Thank's BarG! I think this report is part of what they were talking about.

It sounds like they had all kinds of trouble, the parts about fertilizers is interesting to me. I might try cotton seed meal next year.

I'm skinny but I'm thinking at least another foot maybe foot and a half next year. The biggest leaves yesterday were 18" W x 24" L, I don't know how much longer I'll be able to see the ground.

Steve, I remember locating that site when I had dial up. This morning when you mentioned your grow area it rang a bell and I found it again, I had never read this online book, I finished the part about seedbeds and setting out and had to cut it short , but will finish reading later. I was exploring the cigar factory link in san antonio before you brought that to my attention.

On the upper left hand side of the page you can download the entire PDF

Yea I know, its still sitting here waiting for me to finish. I may see if I can permanently save this article or documentary. It's a piece of Texas history. And the soil they refer to sounds oh so familiar.

The Turkish section has been in the ground 45 days, one each of the Samsun (5 1/2') and Ottoman HY (6 1/2') had their flower buds taken off. The Southern Beauty (FC) has got flower buds down in the baby leaves, they went in the ground 9 days later. I'll post pictures later. Damn I'm excited! BarG, are you carrying your spare shorts yet?

Yup, it was. I took them out yesterday afternoon. They were cheap ones from harbor freight, a waste of money. I ended up putting water in the furrows, it worked great, it just looked like a third world operation. I gotta hurry up and finish my Flue Cure setup.

Leverhead, It looks like your plants are doing great. My orientals are ranging from 3-4 ' at the moment. They have a ways to go yet before I s..t my britchs. ha ha I,ve got some plants topping out in the 5' range and starting to bud as of this morning. I've got 1 each... havana 41, Perique, and silk leaf bagged so far.

I finished that article on the soil surveys and 100 yrs ago some of these areas were just getting settled, It may just be my interpretation but They seem to have specificly chosen far ranging areas in Brazos valley, which is bigger than some states to conduct there survey. I would have to double check on the palestine area but we both are probably growing in similar soils.

It might be true about the soils being the same. Are you on high ground? I guess it's an old soil, islands of it that didn't get washed away by creeks and rivers. I think they said they found it as far west as Giddings. Compared to Houston soils, it's a pleasure to work with!

Fifteen days ago my Orientals were about the same size as yours, it just seems like longer. The Virginia's are getting to be about 5', I'm getting a little antsy about flue curing but that's what I came to the party for. I'm hoping I haven't missed anything.

The state I grew up in isn't much bigger than Harris county, I'm not sure there's a million people there yet. It seems though that parts of Houston still need to be settled.

Three weeks after you top you should start seeing the leaves change color.. but just barely. I start harvesting at 3 weeks but you should probably wait 4 to 5 weeks after topping if you want the leaves to be very yellow and crinkly.
