I'll post some pictures mid/late next week. I want to make sure I get all my "i's" crossed and my "t's" dotted before I call it a flue cure setup.

pic's of a work in progress, is the best kind,

who knows,?

members may give you some helpfull idea's.

Three weeks after you top you should start seeing the leaves change color.. but just barely. I start harvesting at 3 weeks but you should probably wait 4 to 5 weeks after topping if you want the leaves to be very yellow and crinkly.

Thank you! Now I can calm down and get this right. I'm sure I'll be asking "are we there yet?" a few times.

OK,OK,OK(not loud)! I don't have any pictures yet, I'll take some on Monday. Are you thinking of a second crop this year? I am, If the first priming goes reasonably successful.

Go for it ! You think the young plants would start OK in summer heat? If you need a little shade cloth I can send it to you.

with my set-up, starting under lights, and my protected greenhouse to harden them off,

i believe the heat wont be a issue,

I don't know if heat would be an issue and there's only one good way to find out. I want to get some deeper starter trays anyway. I don't what the shorter days in the fall would do to the flowering cycle either. A few months ago when I started the current grow, I didn't take any great pains with hardening off. They went from peat in a plastic box and fair amount of sun to starter trays and most of the day sun in early May. By that time the daytime highs were in the mid to upper 80's, they showed no trouble with that or at transplant or since. The starter trays had 50/50 peat/vermiculite, fertilizer in the water per the North Carolina Flue Cured Guide.

More newb questions. When bagging flowers, is the bag's function just keep out bugs? On bagged plants, can they primed as usual or does it hurt the seeds?

Bagging is just to defeat cross pollination. This is so new plants from the seed are the same as the parent. No change in priming is required. The downside of leaving the blossom on is reduced leaf production. Topped plants put more into the leaf (and suckers).

John, I am with you...I just found the read first unread button after 3 months of scrolling thru the messages from the bottom of the last page...

One suggestion or question; the top button doesn't go to the top. Is that fixable?

Thanks guys! I've got some material and it's real sheer like nylons. I've got enough to make 3 bags, it should get me by until tomorrow. I think I can sacrifice a little yield for the seeds. We got a real nice 1/2 inch of rain since yesterday and everything jumping up.

Damn Leverhead,

Your tobacco patch was impressive. I can see why you want a little more space in your rows. You need to post a new set of pics.

Tim

I saw Steves patch behind his shop last week and was real impressed at the plants he had growing. For someone new at this It was great to see that he could produce such fine looking Southern Beautys, especialy for a Yankee.

[After 12 years the Texan title is earned which he has and deserves] ;)

His Ottomans were a good 2' -3' taller than mine will be. All in all a very neat experience to meet my first ever other tobacco grower in person.

Well BarG, by that afternoon it wasn't that impressive! We've had about 6" of rain and some wind since then. It's a real mess now! I've been working on the "drum" waiting for the first ripe leaves. I started shaking it down yesterday, today and tomorrow making some changes. I'll probably fire it up again on Friday. I guess I'll have to get used to not being a Damned Yankee. It was good to meet you! Don't mind me if I'm a little quiet for a while, I'm sperimentin. So keep an eye on the other thread.

A week after BarG saw my patch things are even less pretty! Including 1" from this afternoon it's had 13" of rain in the last week. The right hand 2/3 is about drowned. Not much else to say.

Next year I'll have more row spacing and drainage ditches.
