It’s hard to stop, once you’ve started: 6th One Sucker transplanted.
The hand watered hydroponic Kentucky has been topped.
And Hyang Cho is an interesting looking plant, that old German ladies ask about what kind of cabbage it is. (Last year, my large pot burley was mistaken for a banana tree)IMG_0086.jpegIMG_0087.jpegIMG_0088.jpeg

Hyang Cho in the kid’s bedroom window.
Mistaken for a loose leaf type of cabbage, by more than one older German lady.

Very compact growth compared to the seedling stage. This would make suckering difficult, but no suckers have yet to show themselves. Leave are very fuzzy and sticky.

Looking forward to trying it in a bamboo pipe, like the Korean farmer who helped Hawkeye, suffering from a concussion in a jeep crash, in the M*A*S*H* episode titled simply “Hawkeye”. First airing on 27 May, 1976. I caught it as a rerun, and always wondered what he was smoking, since Hawkeye commented “manure, right?” when he smelled it. Opinions of non smokers are seldom helpful. Unlike other regions of the world, it would seem that Korean farmers never tried to embrace the Rustica varieties for their own use.IMG_0091.jpeg

During the heat of the day, a whopping 75F here in Germany, my plants wilt. I believe they are doing it to conserve water. This means growth comes to a halt as the
Plant tries to slow itself down, so it won’t dry out. The soil can be just watered, and still they do this. My active hydroponic system (a fancy way of saying fertilizer water in a bucket with roots hanging in the water and an air pump bubbling air constantly through the water) does NOT show this effect. If the flavor is good, I might go with a bit more hydroponic growing next year. (Sorry for the hasty shots- busy schedule) top: hand watered hydroponic- just like the soil plants. Bottom: active hydroponic.IMG_0162.jpegIMG_0163.jpeg

Wilting is common during the heat of direct sunlight. If the plants perk-up after sunset, or in the morning, then that is normal. Stressors in general seem to increase the production of our desired alkaloids by tobacco roots.

I don't know enough about alkaloid production in perpetually happy, hydroponic tobacco.

Small Salk Black Mammoth is doing very well, and the Kentucky is looking ready to harvest on the 28th. (3 weeks after topping)

The Mammoth is right up against the tree line/hedge, where the slugs live, yet they haven’t been touched. The Kentucky is around 15’ away- and the slugs go for them constantly!
The 2 brown pots have Hyang Cho, which slugs are also ignoring.
Depending on how One Sucker holds up against slugs, it looks like it comes down to Small Stalk Black Mammoth, Hyang Cho, and One Sucker as my main crop next year…provided taste and nicotine levels are good. I’m kinda worried about the reported leaf count of Hyang Cho. Yields may not be that great.IMG_0191.jpegIMG_0193.jpegIMG_0194.jpeg

Wruk53- pause that order….
Looking at the pictures of the Hyang Cho, and checking the small (what I thought) MD 609 plant on my balcony, it looks like labels were switched.
The plant I’ve been identifying as Hyang Cho looks a LOT like MD609 on the nwtseeds website. And the small MD609 plant that I thought flowered early due to its small pot size, looks a lot more like the Hyang Cho on the same site.
This is a serious possibility, as they were seeded at the same time,IMG_0205.jpeg
