Just plant some tomatoes nearby. They lived mine last year.
That's a good idea. I'll have to try that.
What you don't have any animals around. They should be pretty good food ( Nicorette ) for birds and reptiles.
I am planning on trying some for fish bait this year in the pond. I'll grab a couple before I spray them with BT.
Congratulations!... I see you've planted the most important tobacco of them all!
I fell in love with the BSS-Maden sample you sent me. It's my favorite stand alone pipe smoke now. I've been hoarding some.
Hornworm Decoys? On my knees beggin if that don't work my dog can get frisky. What are these DECOYS?
I was just kidding about growing decoys, but DGBAMA's idea is worth a try. I'm actually about to start some more plants inside for test and sample and seed.

Time to catch up with some pictures: the first one shows the plot with the fabric and drip in place and the VA planted on the left. planted VG.jpg This one shows one of the VA K236. I snipped off the bottom rounded leaves and planted deep. sample VG.jpg This is a pic of the BSS-Maden row with traditional spacing. The row of Izmir will go next to it with even tighter spacing. BSS Maden.jpg This is my Burley and Izmir ready to be planted. I left it out of the water/fertilizer for about a week and I'm rehydrating the dirt to transplant now. April Float.jpg

These are some sample and taste cigar varieties. They've worked their way from indirect sun to partial sun and they've been in full sun for the past two days. cigar varieties.jpg Here's one of my light set ups, there is a double heat pad under the two trays. I have another one ordered that will be here today or tomorrow. My Texas sunbonnet on the right. light set up.jpg This is a rough sketch of how I'm going to notch the boards in a stepped fashion. I will set the lights in the lowest notches and move up as the plants grow. When they get a couple good leaves they can go outside. It's in the 50's at night and mid to upper 70's during the day now. notches.jpg My weather indicators are predicting an early spring. Poor Phil. dogs.jpg

Thank you! I planted the Izmir this evening. Will wait until after tomorrows rain to do the Burley, my ground is getting hard. The seedlings are looking good due to a forum full of excellent teachers!

Yea, Spring comes first to the southern states. Listening to DrBob tales of 8" of snow makes me cold. I'm out in shirt sleeves planting.

Here's a picture of the Mason's hammer I'm using for planting and driving in my marker stakes. Couple blows and I have a perfect seedling hole. mason's hammer.jpg

I had to get a picture of my spring while it's bubbling away at the foot of the hill. It will dry up middle of summer and my pond level will go down. The spring inside the pond will also lose pressure and the pond will go down to the spring head. There will still be about 7ft. of water. I graded around the pond so the runoff goes around it, instead of in it, even with low water the pond stays clean and cold. spring.jpg Here's the water going to the pond. It's located just below my patch behind the swing. spring to pond.jpg

Love that light set-up idea Knuckles
a solution to my problem

Thanks Amax. It was the best I could come up with for a table top set up. My wife threatened to beat me within an inch of my life if she caught on a ladder again!

I have Samsun Maden but what is BSS Maden? Black Sea Samsun Maden?
So many strains I become Maden myself.

Wallace, you have beautiful land. Have you consider about having big BBQ festival when we collect all our tobacco at the end of the season. Beer, T-bone, baked beens, Seed swap,...cigars...swimming pool

BTW. What's the squirrel doing on the back?

Looking good there. I am still a couple good weeks from planting. Surprised you did not go with a staggered planting arrangement since you have such generous space between rows.

I'm confused too. Is there a difference between Black Sea Samsun and BSS-Maden? I searched around the Internet last night but didn't find anything.

I believe Emre had said in an earlier post that BSS-Maden is more correctly called Samsun Maden. I call it BSS-Maden (Black Sea Samsun) because that is what GRIN called it.
