Wallace, you have beautiful land. Have you consider about having big BBQ festival when we collect all our tobacco at the end of the season. Beer, T-bone, baked beens, Seed swap,...cigars...swimming pool

BTW. What's the squirrel doing on the back?
We can have a BBQ every time you come over. We'll toast our health with Stoliknaya. The Ground Hog is waiting for his friends to scratch his belly. LOL Ground Hogs dig big deep holes in the ground. Farmers hate them because a horse or cow can break a leg in the hole. I usually leave them alone as long as they dig holes on the hillside and not in my field. My father could break a leg in the hole also, hidden by the grass. I found a hole in the field yesterday I have to fill up with rocks before my father steps in it. If I see one digging in the field I have to pop him behind the ear. I like to watch them play. They are very interesting and funny animals, but fierce fighters. They have very large claws for digging.

I believe Emre had said in an earlier post that BSS-Maden is more correctly called Samsun Maden. I call it BSS-Maden (Black Sea Samsun) because that is what GRIN called it.
So the seeds I got from The Tobacco Seed Co. called "Black Sea Samsun" are the same? You guys keep raving about Samsun Maden, so I'd like to know. I may already have several seedlings going.

Looking good there. I am still a couple good weeks from planting. Surprised you did not go with a staggered planting arrangement since you have such generous space between rows.

I was only going to plant 50 Burley and 50 Virginia under drip. ( yep, it has since snowballed) A staggered plan would still have required two drip lines as the lines are fairly stiff and kink easily. I have a 1/2 gal. per hour emitter at the base of each plant, saving water over a system with greater coverage. Watering only the roots, I'm hoping chlorinated water will not be as much of a problem, since alot of the chlorine can escape. With this layout I can drive the four wheeler between the rows to spray for hornworms and I can reach each row from both sides of each row. It will make it easier for me to sucker the crop, spray, prime leaves, etc. My seeder/spreader also mounts to the rear rack of the four wheeler and I can broadcast my fertilizer with the spreader. It runs off the four wheeler battery like my sprayer tank. It may not be the best set up for everyone, but I felt it would make access easier for me. If space was a problem, I could go staggered, but I have plenty of room. With the Turkish varieties, I am trying to duplicate the Turkish methods of growing, tight spacing, no irrigation, very little fertilizer and no topping of the plant.

I'm not sure. The FTT Seed Bank lists Black Sea Samsun and Samsun Maden. The plot thickens lol.

Samsun is a variety. Samsun-Maden is a similar, but distinct variety. The Samsun-Maden is somewhat more delicate and milder than the Samsun.

Thanks. One last question. Does Black Sea Samsun = Samsun with the "Black Sea" part of the name being marketing?

Actually, GRIN called it Samsun Maden too. I searched the site but there's no "Black Sea Samsun Maden" there. They're calling it correctly.

I don't know why people are adding "Black Sea" word to it. Yes, the region where Samsun Maden is growing called "Black Sea Region" in Turkey. In this region there're many varieties growing also, like Trabzon, Taşova, Bafra etc. but, for example, nobody calling Taşova as "Black Sea Taşova". I think adding "Black Sea" word to Samsun Maden and to other varieties growing in this region is really redundant.

They also list "Canik" and "Samsun Canik"
I think I always refer to Samsun Maden as "BSS-Maden" because it's easier to type than "Samsun Maden"

So am I correct that the "Black Sea Samsun" seeds I got from the Tobacco Seed Co. are plain old "Samsun" and not Maden?

I think that's correct. If you take the BS off both, you end up with Samsun and Samsun-Maden. :)

Ok, Ground hog is wild animal. I have never seen one but I find out they leave in mountains they sleep 8-10 months in their holes. they only come out for 2-4 month at summer time. Yours look very happy under the tree. And she waits you to scratch her. Come on. Deliverance. LOL

I'm all in. Now I'm tied with leverhead, we both finished the same day. That does my first wave of 136 plants. Next week I'm sowing my second wave. That should stagger the work about two months apart, and I'm hoping I can get my first wave cured and room cleared for my second wave. OH, Happy Day.
