I got in a new order from WLT and wanted to make up a blend with the new Piloto Seco. I rolled up my 5th try and finally came up with a real mild strength cigar I really enjoyed today.

3 leaves Piloto Seco ( they are thin leaves so it took 3 in this blend )
1 1/2 leaves Criollo Seco
1/2 Meta Fina
1/2 Piloto Viso
Dbl Piloto Seco binder
Crillio 98 wrapper

It was very light and smooth. I'm not much on flavor descriptions so I won't try to describe any. It did have a slight creaminess to it.
I liked this blend and will keep playing with it to also make a med to full strength cigar with the Piloto and Crillio tobaccos.

I'm also going to try that blend with a maduro wrapper.
I'm also trying something new. I seasoned a cedar cigar box with Knob Creek Smoked Maple Bourbon and I'm going to put a few cigars in it to age a few days and a couple for a few weeks. Might work out good then again it might not.

Glad to know I'm not the only one jumping on the "bourbon barrel" bandwagon. ;)

Sounds like a great combo, I'll try that one Fri. AM here!

Timor Wrapper

Garden20150709_1894_cigar_Timor_wrapper_500.jpg

Timor (PI 405659), which I grew in 2014 from seed provided by Knucklehead, is a tall, columnar Indonesian plant that produces fairly large, smooth leaves that kiln to a deep brown. The taste of the wrapper is dry, woody and somewhat ashy. It has moderate stretch, but is not as durable as Besuki. It reminds me, to some extent, of the relatively flavorless Costa Rican maduro wrappers.

This fat cigar is rolled with Timor wrapper and single Timor binder. The wrapper's outer edge was not trimmed. The filler is nearly all light, Machu Picchu Havana volado and seco, with one leaf of Don's Piloto Cubano ligero, for some punch. It lacks any earthy or leathery components. It could use a strip of Nicaraguan Habano for a broader flavor profile.

Bob, that's my favorite size pool cigar for Arizona summers. I have some seeds too, maybe I'll grow it soon. Wasn't the Timor originally used in Kretek (clove) cigars?

Kreteks are clove cigarettes. I'm not aware of cigar leaf being used in it.

The provenance of PI 405659 is murky in the GRIN record. Timor is an island to the extreme east of Indonesia, and is divided in half: Timor, Indonesia and East Timor (Timor-Leste), which is an independent republic. Java, on the other hand is an Indonesian island that stretches from 600 to 1200 miles to the west of Timor. The GRIN data simply says that the name of the tobacco is "Timor" and that it came from Java.

Bob

I just remember the name being associated with clove, probably reading someones hand-me-down information on some tobacco site.

Thanks for clearing this up! Very scientific approach.

If you like it, then great. I got some seed this year from either DGBAMA or Knucklehead. There's quite a few from them I'd like to try out coming up. They're a big+ to this forum.

Smoking a MUWAT at the moment. Have to smoke a few gifted store boughts once in a while to make room for the home rolled. Got my errands and chores done for the day time to relax. Nice whitish gray ash. Room note better than uneventful flavor. Keeps reminding me why I started rolling .

Dave, are you doing a fall/winter crop? Starting now would have them ready for planting about the time your big summer heat breaks I think?

Tried out a new blend with the new WLT product.

Unlit, it had a great smell, and hint of coco on the draw.
Had some burn issues about half way through. Being that I couldn't keep it lit.
The filler was in a little more case than most of my other fillers, so I may need to let it rest for another week.
Cant say I was overly fond of the blend, but I would of kept smoking it if not for the staying lit issues.
But we all know a cigar can taste much different after getting to the proper internal RH.

Just attempted to smoke one I rolled almost 3 months ago - Criollo, Corojo blend with a bit of Nic in it, corojo wrapper . I Must have been eating my Wheaties that day because it was so tight I may as well have been sucking on a pencil ,about popped my ears trying to get any draw . I rolled it around trying to loosen it up , didn't get any better . I even cut down the head end an inch and that didn't help ... eventually I just gave up on it . But not long into it , I looked at the ash end and saw something I had never seen before . A pinkish hued halo about halfway into the layers in the ash. It wasn't the cherry of the burn either ...Pink...what would cause this?? I hope it wasn't mold. Didnt want to continue with it just in case it was.

If you can find a round, solid steel strut from a broken umbrella, it can be sharpened to a point at one end, and used to pierce a tight cigar lengthwise.

I don't know what the pink might be: Serratia marcescens, red algae, red tide (dinoflagelates), slime mold, archaea?

It suggests that your filler was way too wet when rolled.

Thanks Bob, your depth of knowledge amazes me ... Does Google email you for information?? No wonder you're such a busy guy . I believe you have definitely earned yourself a cigar break .
