workhorse. you may want to think of growing in 5 gallon buckets,,,

your soil was very wet. and if we get too much rain, as you and i discussed, they could all be ruined, at least right now they are big enough to dig them up.

I'm going to talk to a friend tomorrow after I get out of the Dr.office about quite a few loads of top soil for the back yard.

Wow, I got back from the auction today and there was no rain at all. I went back to look at the plants to see how many survived the flood, and about two thirds are ok. Not only are they ok but they have grown about 8". They now stand about 2' tall! The best out of the bunch are the Zimmer Spanish. Those boys are getting with it. I took all the goats to the sale except the one my wife bottle raised and my big Boer billy. My Boer nanny brought $127.50 and with just her money I bought a 13" saddle, 8 full grown laying hens, a bull calf & 2 more NZ rabbits. and still had $180 left over. Not bad for a few goats.

Glad you got a break and the plants are doing better. I have been in a "flood funnel" all day, every bit of moisture from the gulf of mexico is funnelling northward into a narrow band over the middle part of Alabama (Me and Knucks) 75 miles east or west of me is dry......I could go swimming in my front yard.

Up until today my wife was worried about getting stuck in the driveway.

I went out on the porch tonight and checked on the new seeds in the starting tray's. They most all have germinated, and are right on track for the second crop this year. If all continues on this track, when I harvest what I manage to save from the floods, I'll be planting a new crop of the same varieties. I hope all the weather will be rained out, and we'll be in a normal pattern. I think knucklehead is kind of banking on the same thing. If winter holds off until late November or mid December like it did last year, I may be able to get a sucker crop too. As soon as the new starts are old enough I'll be transplanting in to miricalgro garden soil, and may hit Amax up for the recipe to his cubes.

I grew Zimmer Spanish in 2011, alongside Comstock Spanish. The are both Havana derivatives, and looked identical while growing.

The Zimmer made a good cigar filler, when air-cured and kilned. The upper leaves kiln to a deep, dark brown, with a chocolaty flavor.

Zimmer Spanish and Comstock Spanish leaf size.

What I found interesting was that, compared to the adjacent Comstock, the Zimmer seemed to serve as a magnet for flea beetles--lots of tiny holes in the leaves. So the Zimmer (from my garden, and in my conditions) did not make useful binder. So my preference leans toward the Comstock.

Thank you, That is a fine looking cigar. I can't wait to taste the chocolate flavor. My plants that survived are really growing. I will have flood tolerant seed soon of each variety.

I'm back from the Dr. in savannah, guess what? He, after bending, twisting, running spiked tools up and down my legs, me falling on my face whilst trying to bend over and touch my toes, (his orders, my hurt wrist) and 8 more x-rays. He has now come to the conclusion, that the other two Dr.'s are correct in their request for surgery. Go figure? Now if they all four together including the pain mgmt. Dr., can convince the obamacare people, maybe I can get this behind me! I told them they had to do it around bacca harvesting, and before next planting season. (No joke;))

Hope you are drying out some this week.

Those with dying lower leaves........trim off the lower couple sets and mound up 4_5 inches of dirt around them. I did this for half of my scraggly looking Turkish and in just a few days they were growing noticeably better. I did the rest yesterday.will try to get pics up on my grow log later.
