I sowed 36 cells of Shirazi this morning. I was so impressed with the aroma of the winter crop that I just had to.

It's been 3 days since I transplanted the SSBM and Bucak. There was no transplant shock and I can see growth already.

Papayas are almost 6 feet now and some flowers should open soon. I was hoping to have at least one male plant, but it looks like they're all female. I can see papayas in some of my neighbor's yards so maybe some of those are males and maybe they will pollinate mine. From what I've read, the Spinx moth is the main pollinator for papayas and I believe they travel long distances to feed.

This morning, I converted the rest of my leaf into flour. I now have five and a half pounds of tobacco flour on hand, which will make about 10 pounds of snus. Now, my dilemma is to figure out which varieties to blend together. I'm thinking of mixing SSBM with Shirazi and LD with Trabzon2. It's a nice problem to have. It will be at least another few months before I need to cook any more. I'll post my results after the next few cooks.

Today is 2 weeks from transplant. Should see a growth spurt soon.

Papayas are over 6 feet now. Flowers have been opening on one plant, however they are just dropping off after a few days.

There is at least one Shirazi seedling in each of the 36 cells. I tried my best to only sow a few seeds in each cell, I was mostly successful. There are a few cells with 6 or more seedlings.

My Shirazi seedlings are doing okay. So far, one seedling perished, and some others are not growing as fast as others. They should catch up though.

A couple of lousy pics of papaya flowers. It turns out I have one female and two males, so I planted more seeds in the large cups that are on top of the seedling tray. Hopefully some of them will be female. Only one male is needed. A and C in the internet pic are representative of the flowers on my plants. Two plants with type A flowers and one with type C.

Two pics of Bucak and SSBM at 3 weeks from transplant.

Shirazi seedlings will be transplanted in the next day or so.

I have 2 papayas sprouting so far. I only planted one seed per cup.

Bucak and SSBM at 4 weeks.

I set up containers for the Shirazi a few days ago. It's a less than ideal setup, but there are low spots on either side and in the foreground that are subject to standing water at times.

Hey folks, just a little update. Six weeks from transplant for the Bucak and SSBM, two weeks for the Shirazi. I keep thinking they should be larger by now. The only thing I've done differently this time is the brand of mulch I used. When I bought the mulch, I paid for "pure cypress mulch" and the store employee loaded "pro cypress mulch" onto my truck. When I pointed it out to him, he assured me that it was the same stuff. When I got home and took a closer look, I found that the pro cypress mulch consisted of "forest products" plus cypress mulch. It would have been such a PIA to return it that I decided to just try it. Won't make that mistake again.

My papayas are about 7 to 8 feet tall. I planted two more seedlings a few days ago.

I like the way you have the pots all in perfect rows and aligned diagonally. It drives me nuts if anything is more than an inch off out in my field. Could just be my OCD, but I swear they grow better! Plus it looks good for the google spy satellite.

Let us know what you think of the Bucak when it's ready to smoke. I found it rather unique for a flu cured strain. I don't get much feed back from people who have grown it and would like to hear what others think.

I'll let you know. So far, it's a more vigorous grower than the SSBM.

Yesterday, during the hottest part of the day, I noticed one SSBM plant that was badly wilted. I saw that the stalk was black for about 4 inches from the mulch going up the plant. The roots look fairly healthy. Might be black shank disease, I don't know. When I dumped the container out, I noticed that the mulch was rapidly deteriorating into muck. That doesn't happen so quickly with the pure cypress mulch. That's what I get for buying "pro cypress" instead of "pure cypress" mulch. I have used the pure cypress for as long as a year before it turns to muck. I gave all the remaining plants a good drench with fungicide this morning. Hope it doesn't spread.

Sowed 24 cells with Little Dutch seeds this afternoon for a winter crop. I'm not going to grow a lot this winter. I plan on planting these up against the south side of the house. Next spring I'll do a larger grow with a few new varieties. I've ordered the following: One Sucker, KY190 and Thompson. One Sucker is a Dark Air, KY190 is a dark burley, and the Thompson is a Maryland type. I plan on starting seeds January 1 to plant out in mid-February.

Bucak and SSBM at 8 weeks from transplant. Both varieties are forming buds. Shirazi at 4 weeks. Bucak average height is about 3 feet, SSBM is slightly shorter.
I've pruned off a lot of lower leaf due to brown spot. Bucak is producing the largest leaf of any variety that I've grown so far. I'm going to bag the best-looking plant for seed.

Papayas are coming along nicely.

Rainy season should start tapering off slowly over the next several weeks. Our dry season is normally in place by November.
