You are slacking off, that middle row is only half planted. :)

I screwed up laying that row out. I spaced the stakes for three plants per variety and ended up planting four plants per variety without moving my stakes. I'm hoping the eight foot row spacing will make up the difference.

How far apart are you spacing the Maryland and burley types? I ask for two reasons: 1. Your plants look really happy, and 2) I may need to grow my baccy in another place (not as much sun as I'd thought) and I will need to calculate spacing.

nice work!

Thank you.
I'm using two feet between plants. My row spacing is eight feet because I do a lot of work from the four wheeler. (I feel I can plant with tighter plant spacing due to the huge row spacing (plenty of sun)) I have a 15 gal. sprayer and a fertilizer spreader that mount to the rear rack and run off the four wheeler battery. I also till between the rows with a tractor a couple of times during the season to keep weeds from going to seed and to keep the soil loose (less run off during rains). I use a stirrup hoe to get the weeds from between the plants. I used 16" between the seed grow out plants last year. Seed was my main goal but with the eight foot row spacing they still received plenty of sunlight and the plants grew large with plenty of nice leaf.

Commercial growers use 2-3 feet between the plants, 3-4 feet between the rows. Commercial growers don't do as much hand work inside the patch as home growers. That close row spacing can be pretty tight for a home grower. Four feet is probably a minimum for comfort with full grown plants and less leaf damage. Commercial growers treat aphids one time at transplant with Admire and many just let the hornworms have their way due to the fact that spraying for them can't be done from a tractor and a couple hundred acres is too much to do by hand and on foot. The extra leaf they would save would not be worth the labor. Many home growers spray soapy water on all the aphids for control, and spray Spinosad or BT for hornworms. We spend a fair amount of time inside the patch on pest control duty. Deluxestogie hand picks his horn worms to avoid the use of chemicals.

Hey, you had mentioned that you've grown Japan 8 before. I'm curious about what is going to be like. What was your impression? Or is this year the first time you've grown it.

I grew it last year, but have just finished kilning it due to my recent kiln build. I still haven't smoked it yet. Last year, Sky said it was his new favorite Oriental, so I just had to grow it. I'll put some in a pipe soon and let you know what I think.

That's exciting.

Maybe it's a strange idea, and i do realize the effort that has to go into it, but I was thinking of starting a hybrid between Japan 8 and Pergeu Brazil. Mixing the two descriptions has me thinking it could be a really tasty cigarillo, or wrapper.

No problem. I like Maryland in a cigarette blend. Not so much in a cigar.

I have read that it's more a cigarette tobacco.. I haven't made any cigars yet.. It's one my "do before I die list", I make oral-snuff (snus), and a few cigarettes just to see if my wife feel any different..
I think Maryland tobacco's will be interesting and great in my mixes but not to much, just like Jupiter-Burley.

I picked off some hornworms this morning. Then went back and knocked them in the head with a dose of Spinosad on all plants. Still no aphids, and I'm loving that!! I hate aphids.

All but four varieties are budding and bagged. I'm not getting much height this go around, I've needed some rain for a month and I'm too lazy to run all the hoses I need for water. I found some soaker hoses I'll buy in time for next year.

Maryland 609 on the right. 2-4' tall. Should be ready to top next week.

VA 355 Dark Air on the right. 2-4' tall. Topped this week.

I primed some Besuki Seco from the four plants. I let them get too ripe.

The Besuki is perfect. It yellows on the plant early, like a white stem burley. What's curious is how that bland looking, faded leaf kilns into a rich, medium brown wrapper leaf.

Looking good Knucks. Some of mine are going to bud also.
I though it was early too.
Its not from lack of rain either.
