Update, I cut and smoked the unknown Havana black Cavendish and it is to harsh for me. I need to clean the palate every 2 to 3 puff. I can't go any further than 1/4 of the bowl. In nicotine content I don't now much how to judge it but I feel some dizziness so I think it is hi. Will let it rest a month to see it improve.

My impression, from the batches of Black Cavendish that I have made, is that the nicotine strength of the final product depends entirely on the nicotine strength of the leaf used.

If you have some flue-cured tobacco, you might try blending it with the strong Black Cavendish. That will lower the pH, and thereby lower the nicotine absorption.

Bob

EDIT: I would also expect the addition of citric acid to similarly decrease the pH and the nicotine absorption.

I know I have seen and commented on this thread last year when I got started in this hobby that has consumed my free time and taken me almost completely away from Facebook. . Now that I have actual homegrown leaf. I have been picking lately and I have what I call my "mystery leaf" pile which just happen to be leaves I have picked but between the plot and the garage ,I had forgotten which leaves came from which plants...I have these leaves hanging in a small dried hand and I'm thinking of making some cavendish with them .

That sounds like a good use for mystery leaf. You could also try your hand at making homemade Perique. The problem will come if it's the best you ever had and you have no idea how to duplicate it. :(

at the 2 hour mark...checking it ....
the leaf color isn't much darker
still smells like cooking spinach ,a little grassy still
water level is about 3/4 what I started with and definitely turning brown
had a small dry spot in the middle so I used a bamboo skewer to lightly rearrange and fluff the leaf.

I'm steaming about 1 part each Little Dutch ,Madole and Black Mammoth ...all lower leaves (mudlugs and low volado)all totaling about 2 dozen leaves.
Seems easy enough to do , just time consuming. I'm hoping at the rate of steam ,it should be about out of water at the 8 hour mark, around 5pm today .
Nice rainy day project. I can foresee a dry middle of winter day doing this .One of those days the wife is at work and I have nothing to do besides watch the white stuff pile up. Raise the humidity in the house while making tobacco-ey goodness. Hoping I get something decent from this.

hour 3 ...the aroma is starting to change ...went from wet musty grassy to a bit sweet and fruity like warm applesauce with a hint of yeasty baked bread ... kind of a weird combination but smelling nice.

hour 7 ...I had to run to the store for dinner fixins so my nose got some time away from the steaming tobacco and when I came back in the house the aromas took another turn...now I smell caramel and hazelnut...smells exactly like the Erik Nording pipe tobacco I have ...what a wonderful smell !!!
I'm tempted to take a portion out and leave it as is and finish steaming the rest and see what the aroma turns into next...

I sure will. Been reading a lot about it . Thats what I've pounded into my own head is drier than store bought.
I didn't have time to continue my steaming session so what I did was took it out and after taking the cooled ball of wet tobacco in hand I squeezed the molasses dark juice out of it like a dishrag ,noticed even after steaming the juice made my hands a bit sticky...I fluffed it out a bit ,then put it in a ziplock bag and while in the bag ,made a bit of a firm log with it at the bottom then put it in the fridge...Hope to continue the steaming on Friday maybe get another 6 hours on it.

I'm not sure why the leaf is collecting liquid water. In my various arrangements (always with a lid over the leaf), the tobacco became damp, but never soggy, and the water in the pot had very little color--indicating to me that water was not leaching various solutes from the leaf. I suspect that the temperature of the leaf (for whatever reason) needs to be below that of the steam, in order for the water to condense in the leaf.

I get lots of really brown water. I suspect you are right about the condensation. I haven't gotten my tobacco to a black colour and that's probably from the leaching. Next time I will try it with some insulation over the lid of the crock pot.

Crock pot, eh?
Questions: How many leaves were you able to get in there?
Did it ruin the crock pot in any way/shape/form?
Did you have to leave the thing outside to placate your (apparently reasonable) spouse - because of the smells?

I have a second crock pot I bought with some crock liners to use for cooking latex paint off antique hardware in my house, because restorations make you do crazy things. Haven't used it for stated purpose yet, but will have plenty of leave to experiment with pretty soon.
