Wooohoo! Got a chance to smoke a couple home rolls during the Packers vs Rams game yesterday. GO PACK!

#37- WLT-Terroso Profundo kit
W-Habano 2000
B-CV PA Binder
Filler-Corojo viso- ( 2 whole leaves)
-Criollo ‘98 Ligero- (1 whole leaf)
-CV Dom Seco- (1 whole leaf)
Rolled: stacked leaves on top of each other and rolled as 1.
Mold: Used little 2 slot wood mold.

PROS: Outstanding flavor! This blend definitely hits on some sweet, yet dry flavors a little earthy and bakers chocolate. I don’t know any other fancier way to describe it. Nub worthy blend for sure!

CONS: Only cons were with my rolling. Filler was loose in the head and other certain spots. Had to relight a couple times. Overall, the cons I look at as learning opportunities for next time.

#8- “Medium Combo”
W-(wrapped-12/18/2020=about 1 month in humidor) Aged Pennsylvania Broadleaf
B-CT 2LS
Filler- Dominican Criollo ‘98 Ligero (3 whole leaves)
-Nicaraguan Seco Jalapa (2 whole leaves)
-Dominican Criollo ‘98 Seco (1 whole leaf)
Rolled style: stacked leaves and rolled all as 1.
Mold: Used 2 little 2 slot mold.

PROS: Decent flavors. Enjoyable, but didn’t have that extra kick I was expecting out of wrapper/ binder combo.

CONS: very soft in spots and could only smoke about 1/2. I got tired of touching up and tunneling.

Side notes: WLT tobacco blend had more of a “dang this is good”! Quality tobacco for sure that is better than most premium cigars I’ve tried. Top notch!

Areas of improvement:More consistent bunching of filler to have less soft spots. Also, needing to make sure the head stays a little more solid throughout smoking.

I stopped by that Breckenridge distillery when riding cross-country, but the doggone thing was closed on a Sunday!
Not about to visit their restaurant, where they charge $25 for ramen. Too high-toned for me.
But coulda stood a drink that day.
Long ride.

How's their hooch, @FrostD?

Oh man! The Breckenridge was fantastic! Paired with the first half of the Terroso Profundo blend it helped bring out some outstanding characteristics. The second half of the Terroso Profundo blend I drank some Templeton 4 yr. shown in pic. I was expecting the “Rye kick” from the Templeton and it was super pleasant out of the gate. After a couple seconds it opened up and karate kicked my palate with addicting flavors.

I love finding good $25-$50 bourbon, scotch, or Whisky’s. Lots of gems out there without needing to spend top Dollar on “The Good Stuff” in my opinion.

Trying out some different styles and blends with my coffee this morning. 2 in mold are Terroso Profundo blend. Paper clip is an all “scrap” cigar. 2x Brown wrapper ones may or may not turn out, but an attempt with some different 1/3 layers of versions Ligero’s... fingers crossed. May roll this afternoon or evening. Have a couple extra binder leaves cased up in grocery bags and may attempt some other “craziness” lol.

Before and after! :ROFLMAO: C5677829-5FCB-4339-8E08-0324C260EEA8.jpeg26C20D55-2403-447F-BB23-6397320B1500.jpeg
Habano 2000 wrapper on #41 & #42. #43 is an all scrap cigar down to the Habano 2000 wrapper. #44 & #45 Dominican Olor wrapper... wowza can I say that Olor wrapper exceeds any hopes or expectations I’ve had for any wrapper! Super easy to work with for newbie like me.

Have you seen paper molding applied in strips like wrapper?

What do you mean by used binder?
@ChinaVoodoo I reread my post again... I’m not quite sure what I meant exactly. Either it was a phone auto correct or an incomplete thought. That can happen relatively frequently to me. I can elaborate though. I used binder that I’ve been casing for a couple days. I’ve been attempting to case at different times of the day and checking on both binders and wrappers that I toss into grocery bags, a way that @GreenDragon suggested in an earlier post. It does make a big difference for sure! I didn’t spray the binder with any more water before rolling with it. It seemed like it had a good moisture content.

Lesson learned first hand now... casing and taking your time bringing the moisture content up opposed to drenching leaf makes a HUGE difference. I suppose it also depends on what you are trying to accomplish for that rolling session.

@MarcL When looking at the end results (right after removing the newspaper) in the video of the paper strips, it looks like the end result is somewhat similar to how I’m rolling with the brown paper. I’ll take a sheet of brown paper and try to flatten to take out any sort of major wrinkles. Then, typically I’d say on average cut the brown paper down to very roughly about 1 1/2’ x ~ 8” and then take any corner and tuck it around the middle section of my doll. Then just roll until I run out of brown paper. Then I tape, glue, or adhere in any way the end of the brown paper. It seems like the brown paper is slightly thicker too than news paper. The only real big problem I’ve experienced up to this point is forgetting where the ends of my doll are. I’ll stick a finger in each end to get an idea of where they are and then twist the ends of the brown paper at each end of the doll. I’ll be a little more careful if the brown paper starts to twist all wonky or just go light on the end twist opposed to cranking on it.

I do have to say that after a cold draw on the binder wrapped filler that so far it’s had some decent air flow. The only twisting I’ve noticed is if I get over zealous on the ends. Soft spots have only been where I’ve neglected the spots while rolling up the filler in the binder. Overall though, I like how the surface area of the brown paper while overlaps a ton, it creates a very sturdy dried doll to wrap. A step further if desired as like in the video, is to find soft spots on the ends and just cut them out... if they are that substantial.

My questions on the news paper strips would be, does it tighten the doll a decent amount or is it primarily to act as an absorber of excess water/ moisture?

I have some newspaper laying around and may just attempt to roll up a couple sticks tomorrow to compare vs the brown paper.

His message at the end is pretty spot on in my honest opinion. I’ve been taking “inventory” of my 8 year old premium collection and it’s been taking me a couple months now. Covid definitely got my thought process going though. There’s so many premium sticks out there that are $10-$15 that I typically eye up. Needed something to my hands busy in between conference calls for work.... so far, ANY stick that I’ve rolled with WLT tobacco has been chock full of flavor! This past weekend I smoke a home rolled cigar, then a premium brand. I was disappointed with the premium brand... it blew my mind to be honest. I had to smoke a 3rd home roll, just to confirm my thoughts. At this moment, I can only think of a handful of premium blends or brands that could top a home roll.

@FrostD In that video I intended to point out how he takes a long strip of paper and applies it from the foot to the head like a wrapper. This enables RG variance down the length of the doll. Not rolling figurado you say? that is where this method really shines given whatever amount of leaf there is in a given spot, the same pressure can easily be applied evenly leaving consistent bunching.
The paper thickness matters. I use blank newsprint paper.
A flat sheet doesn't work well to press.
This is a better view of it.

Paper will wick out moister some. It can get re-applied and/or double applied. A little masking tape is nice. Or a lot is better.
You will be able to get it to tight with paper molding. Other considerations may be draw density and burn density can very. I set the draw in the head. The body is set for burn.(looser) And the foot set a little looser for ease of lighting. Firmness increases after drying.

5 X 48/56 - Los Rios, Bronceado, a barber pole Bronceado/San Andres and San Andres wrappers.

from the center. ASP/Black/Peru ligeros and Peru/CV Pa seco fillers. CV PA seco and CV Pa binders.

@MarcL I watched the video and am going to attempt today. Have some leaves from my last order I need to crack open to add to some blends. The newspaper is considerably thinner than the brown “packing” paper I’ve been using.

Awesome spread of home rolls! They look professional from a mold! Top notch!
