Smoked my first Criollo out of the garden this year. Wrapped this little guy with each of the 3 primings and a Pennsylvania "Oscuro" wrapper. Profile wise it was very mild body, almost had a tongue bite like pipe tobacco but decent construction and draw. Burned super slow so I'm convinced they need a little more time in the humidor. I laughed at reviewing this picture cuz my cap makes the cigar look like it's wearing a turbin. Ha. Something to work on.View attachment 53806
Which Criollo did you grow? 98' or Bolivian Black?

Cameroon binder, criollo98 seco piloto seco, piloto Viso nic viso.

Attempted a couple with cameroon wrapper, but this leaf was new to me and was a struggle. The other two with Maduro.

Happy with the mold I made, but wrapping the foot was harder than I thought it would be... Even after watching @waikikigun videos on repeat the past couple of weeks

This is a photo from @MarcL, shown in the WLT Wiki, for wrapping a figurado:

The foot is on the right.

Cylindrical portions of the doll are wrapped with it laying flat on the board. Significantly tapered parts are wrapped by lifting the head off the board 30° or so, depending on the slope of the doll at that part. At the end of the slope, the remainder of the cigar is rolled flat on the board. Your tricky cigar is cylindrical at the very foot, then tapers significantly to the full width of the cigar.

Finally back at it! Had a bit of craziness with work, moving to my first home, fixing some household stuff, and getting my work/ rolling stations setup in my office. First blend knocked out at the house is my R.O’B blend!

W-Brazil CT 2013
B-CT BL
F-Black Ligero
T-13 Viso
Nicaraguan Condega Seco 2014

Batch of 20 in a WLT cigar box. All lengths are about 5”-6” x 50 rng.

Those look fantastic! I’ve made a similar filler blend with various wrappers. Enjoy!
Thank you @GreenDragon very appreciative of the kind words. Imho the black Ligero & T-13 Viso are wonderful to blend with. The Brazil CT wrappers have been one of my favorites for sure! Great leaf + a little mixing of blends + some focus on binding & wrapping. Can make a difference.

Now I have a notebook full of blends to get to. Always keep striving forward!

Been slacking on documenting my rolling journey as of late and decided to start making a much better log of every leaf in my collection as of this moment. So without further ado, tonight shall be the first of many puros starting with the leaf I have the least of left. A Columbian Seco that was fairly easy to find leaf nice enough to be both binder and wrapper. Used both halves for a binder and 2 leaves as filler. Made a nice 5” x 46 RG puro. Gonna let it sit about half hour or so in this low humidity. Back with updates on what my extremely limited palate can taste. IMG_0078.jpeg

Columbian Seco Puro - 5” x 46 RG
RH - 71% foot ; 78% head
Burn Time - 1 hr 40 mins

Before lighting I found it had a slightly bitter , maybe almost acrid taste. Was hoping that this was from my wrapper having been cased over 6 hours and was still cold but not moist. Pliable but not overly stretchy. But should have let it sit another hour or so after my last mist.

Anyways …

1st Third - Finding it kind of fruity and fairly mild. Easy retro giving me those fruity notes. Like non Tropical fruits. Normally puffing gives a bland slightly earthy almost woody maybe. Slightly oily on the lips.

2nd Third - Picking up in flavour. Fruity dropping on retro and getting more of an earthy vegetable taste. Like beets or radishes. I know those are very different but they have that earthy lingering after taste all the same. I digress … regular puff reveals a coffee aftertaste and a spicy undertone. On notes of rolling, ash was fairly tight, almost stacked dimes, and didn’t fall till after finishing the first third.

Final Showdown ! - Alrighty the best and worst depending on who you ask. I usually don’t mind finishing nubs but some refuse smoking past where the band would have been had I wrapped one on this. Digression again sorry folks. Didn’t burn for a shiet, and had to relight it twice. Left it bitter and ashy, which I won’t rank at the end here. Bit the tongue a bit and got a much more pronounced earthy taste on the retro.Regular puffs left a very acrid bitter taste, likely from the relights.

Body - 4/10. Chocolate - 0/10
Dark Fruit - 6/10 throughout. Nutty - 0/10
Tropical Fruit - 0/10. Woody - 1/10 first few puffs (no cedar involved)
Herbal - 0/10. Earthy - 2/10 throughtout
Spicy - 3/10 mostly near end. Leather - 0/10
Sweet - 3/10 start and mid Bitter - 3/10 throughout seconds after retro or puff
Vanilla - 0/10. Oily - 2/10 left the tiniest amount of tar on lips
Dark Coffee - 2 second third. Linger/Finish - 3.5

Overall I give the Columbian Seco a 3.5/10.

Half decent leaf, large, and easy to work with. Left something to be desired in terms of taste, was just lack-luster, needs a nice viso or spicy Ligero maybe. Again take everything I say here with a grain of salt as I’m myself just starting this wonderful journey into the beautiful and relaxing world of cigars. Happy rolling BOTL! Ciao.
