Humidor is starting to get a little empty, so I rolled a few cigars last night; a mix of WLT and BB and some home grown Havana. This batch was free handed with no molds and finished with pigtails.

Summer has definitely come to central Texas - we had a high of 98 F yesterday, so I waited until it dropped to a chilly 86 F at 10:30 pm to try one out. I decided to tail gate to get a better breeze. A very enjoyable time: nice cigar, warm breeze, cold soda, and the stars.

Nice stick, and depressing forecast. They tell you what you should feel like, second by second. They never provide a smells-like or tastes-like forecast. Maybe AI could help. "In your back yard, it will feel like crap, smell like a hand-rolled cigar, and taste like cold soda."

Remind me to send you one of my spare fur trapper's hats. To help you survive the frost, ya know.

Thar's Gold in Them Thar Little Yeller Trash Piles

Little Yellow is a dark air variety that may be useful as a cigar blending minor condiment, but not straight. Mud-cured trash at the bottom of a tobacco plant is the exception for all very strong tobaccos. A combination of sun and rain and dark of night always makes these trashy leaves mild, regardless of the variety. So it's not really an effective method to "test" what is currently growing.

But it is seldom worth expending much effort on mud-cured trash leaf. There is usually nobody home. This particular effort turned out to be somewhat tasty and interesting. It's a bit stronger than I would have expected.

Seriously It's the first day of summer. All Y'all down in the south done stole our heat. which is That's fine, on account of we can breath without them forest fires.

The only "southerner" who spoke with such complex sentences was Doc Holliday (a dentist, actually), who was Harvard educated.

Cuban cigars have a unique, identifiable character (I can't describe it) .

I feel they have a "barn yard" manure and hay aroma. Also lite on the Nic. Would it be out of context to say they taste like crap? But you know, in a good way!

Is this due to the tobacco still containing higher amounts of ammonia? What aids to the "barnyard" aroma?

Last few years I get a unique spicy, creamy, slightly Mexican chocolatey kind of thing for which I really lack the vocab. No hay, no crap. Other than the "Holy crap" I gut from guys when I blind taste-test them on a Cuban I really like. I reckon this is why I think 5000-word descriptions of the taste experience of a given reviewer for a given cigar is not that useful. One guy tastes hay crap, the next guy tastes cinnamon cream on the same stick.

A barnyard or manure aroma, no matter how mild or subtle, is nearly always from growth of coliform bacteria. This likely grows during the fermentation process, with the live organisms slowly dying away afterwards. Most coliform bacteria (commonly found in the soil) are completely harmless, though their growth adds that "earthy" or even "barnyard" aroma. The coliforms we worry about (and which our noses are trying to warn us about) smell the same as the harmless coliforms. Coliforms from livestock and human feces may contain harmful or invasive strains, though they usually do not.

So stinky tobacco is only a worry if the source of the coliform bacteria is the result of improper hygiene. [Wipe your butt. Don't wash your hands. Make a batch of Perique. Yikes!]

I was surprised. A bit damp / needed a few relights. Reminded me of a Hamlet / Cafe Creme. Tasted like a mild cigar. Did not taste of straw / Hay / harsh / ass.
First smoke of my homegrown.
It was good.

There is no barnyard in legit Cubans, plenty of vitamin N, and exquisite flavor to boot. I still remember the first time I had one many moons ago. Most cubans sold worldwide are counterfeit, especially in the Americas. The genuine articles are sublime.
