Chaco, you hiding steel skewers in those things? That's gotta be the longest holding ash I've seen. (until waikiki burns that 14 incher anyways)

No skewers. The cigar is only 4 3/4 inches long so the ash is only about 4 inches. Just looks cool cuz it's the whole cigar.

My short filler (scrap) endeavor: all bound with T-13 viso.
50ga torpedos - nine with Nicaragua Rosado wrapper and one with Habano 2000
34ga - three are good and three are tight. Nicaraguan wrapper
And a paper mold 7.5x56 also with the same wrapper

Really could have taken longer to hydrate the veins on the wrapper leaves, but hey. They're for me anyways.

Does properly hydrating the veins make them smoother , less pronounced ? How do you all deal with wrappers with large veins ?

I'm not a pro, but if they are soft, you can use a roller of some kind to flatten them out a bit. Also, when stretching the leaf, you can more easily get them straight, thus avoiding little squiggles and such.

In my experience the larger the veins the longer they need to sit at high case to make them elastic enough to stretch and smooth out. In such cases I usually wet my leaves down well the day before and let sit 24 hrs in a Ziploc bag to soften. I then carefully stretch each secondary vein out one at at time right before applying.

Short answer: yes. You want your wrapper in high case: supple and stretchy, but not soggy. I don't do any flattening/rolling with a pin, see no need. Gently but generously hydrate over a couple of days so it's like a nice cigar straight out of a good humidor: flexible and oily, no cracking or rustling, but neither dripping nor moldy. Maybe just a touch more moisture than that and you have wrapper that will apply nicely.

Finally got my scrap short filler sticks to draw well and look decent. Being the greater part binder and wrapper, they are tasty.

Favorite part about short filler: don't need to portion it out, just chop it up and go. Hard part is using a much lighter touch to bunch than usual, and the dolls feel a bit squishy compared to long filler with the right draw when wrapping.

.. the only thing I could add beyond the tips above is utilize the outer edge, a softer bunch can absorb some of it and limit overlapping.

Yes, I'll try the suggestions mentioned starting with higher case , and if that doesn't work , use a rolling pin or flatten the vein with my fingers.

One more thing to do is, when all is done, take your chaveta, slap it down on the stick while its flat on the board, roll it back and forth betwixt the two turning it once or twice.

4.5 x 42. The shoddy capwork is on account of me trying to wrap these Dominican style, at which I have practiced little and typically suck. Lately I roll ten diff blends; so after I photo these I stick on labels listing the date and slot #, which match up with the blend info in a spreadsheet. So that means I can't accidentally drop these puppies before I label'em. In this case the "blends" are one kind of leaf (one priming of one variety). The binder and wrapper are the same across the 10.
