There are times when I pose my cigar in front of a highly detailed background (say, dozens of tiny chrysanthemums), and have difficulty getting my camera's auto-focus to focus on the relatively featureless, brown cigar, instead of the background. A forum member (forgot who) suggested focusing on my fingertips. So now, keeping the distance unchanged, I focus the center of the field on my fingertip, then, once the camera chirps at me, shift the field of view to frame whatever background I've selected. Since my cigars tend to be somewhat lumpy and bumpy, it's now all there for the world to see.

(I'm smoking a lumpy one right now, with kind of a crummy looking ash, but a lovely draw, and enjoyable aroma!)
