I'm about 15 sticks in now, and my supply of Melodioso Cremosa has been exhausted so I've ordered some more kits to try.

Here was the last one to come of the line last night, I'm pretty pleased with how they're coming out! There's still lots to improve on, but these should be smokable.

Will.

You are way ahead of the curve WL. It took me about 30 to 40 cigars to get a cigar that nice. Keep at it and enjoy.

Well done! Keep it up!

Warning: I went a similar route, and when I got the rico y obscuro kit, it came with Criollo 98 wrapper leaves that would not burn, even stone-dry from the bag. No idea if it was a unique anomaly. No troubles at all with the other blend kits. But if you get the rico y obscuro with the Criollo 98 wrappers and your leaves burn find, I'd love to hear about it.

Thank chaps! I owe my progress entirely to the resources here and Don's outstanding product :).

I've ordered more Melodioso (because it's dee-lish) and some Terroso Profundo.

The Criollo 98 leaves that come with the kit are the same as the ones that can be ordered separately. Mine burn fine. I'd have to say unique anomaly.

@Knucklehead Thanks, good to know.

I've had mine for a year or more so it may not even be from the same bale. Don't get turned off to the variety just because of a bad burn experience with one bag. It's some fine tasting tobacco. You can work what you have in as a filler with some better burning tobaccos and come up with some good tasting blends with it. Wrap it in good burning binder and wrapper and you'll be fine. Maybe the end of the field where your leaf came from got a little too much chlorine or something.

The absence of defects in the leaf itself, no holes, tears, etc. is what qualifies leaf for wrapper grade. It comes off the same plant as filler and binder. You can not only use your wrapper as filler, since it won't burn well, but you can also search through your filler leaves and usually come up with a leaf or half leaf here and there that are defect free enough to use as wrapper leaf.

@Knucklehead Thanks for the info. I will not fear that leaf. Actually I think I've used it before and enjoyed the aroma.

I decided to chuck those leaves. It was probably $8 worth of leaves and not worth putting them into other sticks as filler, IMHO. The stuff just turns black, bubbles, and smells like burnt tire. I'd rather take the 8-buck loss than have such stuff in my sticks. No biggie, all part of the fun.

Chaps, someone asked me a question and I'm not sure of the answer. How old is Don's tobacco typically? I think I saw a reference to it being about four years old, but I'm not sure that's correct.

I've looked on the WLT site but unless I've missed something I couldn't find the info. It would be great to know how old the leaf is and perhaps where it comes from :).

I'm pretty lazy with my rolls, I bind and wrap at the same time, no patience to let dry before wrapping.
Capping is something I have not focused on much and I'm not great in areas that require attention to detail.

Left to right I got a loose fill with various filler, binder and wrapper is Criollo.

Middle one:
1/2 Wrapper, Aleman
1 x Binder Criollo (double binder)
1 x Cubano viso
1/2 x Criollo Ligero
1/2 x Mata Fina

Far right one is the same as above but with Nic Ligero instead of Criollo

Smoked the first two , very enjoyable. The short fill kept smoking even after putting down for 10-15 minutes, lots of smoke.

They look not bad considering I'm not using a mold and my wrapper leaf is not really wrapper grade.
Waiting for the new wrapper leaf to come in before I buy some and see how this improves the look of my cigars.
Once I can get consistently shaped sticks and figure out the cap thing I'll buy a mold.
