Chopped Filler Cigar

Garden20180520_3569_cigar_shortFiller_Rosado_600.jpg

This free-hand stogie began with a binder of BigBonner Corojo 99. I used a full half-leaf, and also cut the second half into two sections, laid onto the first binder so that the filler would begin on a mat of binder the full-length of the cigar. A few long scraps were used to form a trench into which a generous handful of short filler (a bit larger than my pipe shred) was distributed. So the full length of the cigar begins rolling at once. In free-rolling a short filler cigar, I strive to create a tapered and fairly tight head, so bits don't fall out while smoking. Since the short filler is kept in low case, I compress it as tightly as possible. Although I trimmed the back edge of the Rosado wrapper just enough to remove the hefty vein ends, the wrapper strip was wider than usual, so that it could add even more compression. A compressing cap was also added at the head.

Since my gallon bag of short scrap is a mix of just about everything that I ever put into filler, it always makes a delightful, richly flavored blend, with no more strength than my average cigar. The draw is flawless, and the burn, of course, is excellent.

D0CH0LLIDAY, those look solid and quite smokable.

MarcL, stunning as usual.

Chacocii, nice work.

It is always fun to discover more pics of sticks when I visit the forum.

When I see so many perfectly shaped cigars, I am ashamed by the shape of mines :D :D

Cheap Wrapper

Garden20180528_3575_cigar_WLTDomSecoWrapper_600.jpg

Rumaging through a bag of WLT Dominican seco filler, I came across a reasonably intact half-leaf. So that is my mild and flavorful wrapper. I used WLT Besuki Wrapper as a double binder. Inside is

  • WLT Dom seco
  • WLT Nicaragua Habano viso
  • WLT Piloto Cubano viso
  • home-grown 3 year old, dark Vuelta Abajo viso
It all comes out to medium-full strength.

I reckon they smoke good enough, though these are only 5 days old. A couple more weeks would even them out

Homely-Grown Cigar

Garden20180602_3590_cigar_VueltaAbajo_600.jpg

This home-grown 2016 Vuelta Abajo mid leaf all looks like the wrapper. It's a mottled, medium and darker brown. The unlit leaf aroma is soft and well-aged. Burn is not excellent, but not too bad either, although it burns to a through-and-through, bright white ash.

There is no harshness or bitterness. The taste is soft. Aroma is full and reasonably complex, though I think it could benefit from a slight edge of a small amount of bitter condiment. Strength is medium.

As a wrapper and binder, this particular batch of leaf offered only marginal tensile strength, and okay stretch. For beauty, it has a face only a mother could love.

For home-grown leaf, Vuelta Abajo is fairly productive (though considerably less so than Corojo 99), and sometimes provides beautiful wrappers, both lighter and darker. There is always an abundance of excellent Habano cigar filler.

Very impressive for only just starting out, @jParnell ... Congrats!! :)

Thank you much! Those are #s 29-38 that I rolled. The first 18 was done with Leaf Only's shoddy 2x 5x48 mold. I say shoddy because it split the first time I put a clamp to it. The following 10 was the first batch I made with a 10x 7x47 Churchill mold, and what you see above is the second batch (less one that I smoked right off the table).

Honestly, I think my 2nd batch was packed a little too tight - I'm hoping that dry boxing then for a couple weeks will loosen then up a little. The batch I have in the mold now I'm hoping are a little better.
