Rolled two more tonight, the Azucarado Oscuro II blend. The horrible looking moster stick on the right was rolled with, essentially, dry leaves straight out of the bags...just lightly moistened the wrapper. The one on the left used leaves in a more workable state.

Still, I decided to smoke the dry stick just to see what I was working with...the first home rolled i've smoked! It was the worst constructed cigar I've ever had the pleasure of smoking. But, it was a pleasure, it tasted very good. I'm even more excited now to try the other sticks I've rolled.

My rolling will be on hold for a little while now as I wait for more cigar glue to arrive...

Having done a bunch of "blend testing" with only limited success, I've accumulated several bags of scraps... So, I decided to try a short filler cigar bound in Sumatra; no wrapper. Whaddya know, it's my best blend yet!

I had the same thought the other day, when I took a bunch of scraps, rolled it and smoked it !
When I rolled it I thought : "this cigar will certainly taste weird and not smooth", but when I smoked it I completly changed my mind : it was very smooth and the different tobaccos merged to give a really nice and complexe smoke !

This "random cigar" was a very good one, far better than a lot of my first blending tests :)

Something WLT on the inside, something Larry on the outside:

Usually, when I'm preparing to roll one or more cigars, I begin by selecting the binder, then the wrapper. Last comes the process of looking though the bags of filler varieties, and selecting an arbitrary blend that seems reasonable.

I was rushed. I wanted a cigar now. The first thing I grabbed was a bag of WLT Corojo seco filler leaf. In attempting to remove a single leaf, 4 of them came out, stuck together. On the top was a perfectly intact half-leaf. Good enough.

I sorted the little pile into a wrapper, something resembling a binder, and the rest. I wouldn't allow the wrapper sufficient time to hydrate. Ugly didn't matter. It just had to become flexible enough to wrap a hurried cigar.

I bunched, bound and wrapped it, trimming away the wrapper's heaviest veins. A WLT Corojo seco puro.

This ugly thing is a delight. Strength is medium. The flavor profile is a straight line--no complexity at all. It really tastes like a lot of genuine Cuban cigars that I've enjoyed, but not quite as harsh as the typical Cuban.

Sometimes, complexity (and beauty) are overrated. I promise the next one will look nicer.

I can agree with that! I had a Cohiba Red Dot tonight. It was good, but I honestly enjoyed both cigars I've hand rolled more than I did this relatively pricey cigar. Is it because I rolled them myself? Is it because the leaf is better? Its certainly not because mine looked better or were rolled better. In the end, I don't think I really care...just that I know I liked mine better. Taste, and subsequently smoking, is one of the few things where your subjective opinion is the only one that matters, and I'm happy to let that be my guide.

Here are the sticks I rolled tonight. I tried using my mold for the first time with ... I wouldn't call it success, but it certainly isn't a failure...so it is success? Just not sure if it really did anything.
