Apparently there is some sort of trend using firecured in cigars? Had no idea. But, I've been enjoying using it as a wrapper lately, no particular blend for the filler though... yet. Using it as a wrapper makes for quite the smoke. Lots of aroma, nutty, smoky, floral, lots of complex warm aromas. Very stretchy as a wrapper and very forgiving. Stretching firecured tightly onto the cigar gives it a sheen shiny enough you can almost see your reflection. However, the nature of the firecured leaf necessitates the cigar to be a bit drier than normal to burn well.

Well it was kinda cumbersome to carry around a WHOLE pizza cutter. Better maneuverability without the handle.

That's a nice mod too. .... but, I meant the other mod.... I have one just like it that needs the same modification. they just don't make the thumb hole big enough.

Sounds interesting Matty.

What do you think is the reason for the shine of the wrapper? Is it because it's fire cured or is the shine common among all VA 309 tobacco leaf?

Does it retain it's shine once it's dried?

Have you ever tried VA 309 that has not been fire cured to see what it tastes like?

Thanks for any input!

I believe it's an Orinco/VA cross. I'm leaning toward the wrapper, it's not that much more. The Orinco by itself has a very high nicotine count, but not sure about what happens when it's crossed. I would assume it's still pretty high.

I guess the wrapper could always be used as filler if need be. The shine on the wrapper has me intrigued as well as the flavor.

Oh, I broke that cutter, but then I fixed it with what I had. Works better now except the blades come out of the frame. I have a nice xicar cutter but use the old one as a tuck cutter.

Don't know too much about the shine but if I had to guess I'd say that such a thick mature leaf as it is has a lot of oils in it. I haven't had one dry out yet but so far the ones I've rolled stay fairly shiny. Have not tried any 309 on it's own. All I can say is you'll just have to try it. I used the firecured as filler in a blend a few times before but it doesn't have nearly as big of an impact as it does as a wrapper.

Trying out a new blend. First one I smoked tasted great. I"m going to try to keep my hands off a few of these and let them age a while.
A few others I added a little Almen legerio

2-Criollo 98 seco
1-Pilato seco
1/2-Meta fina
1/2- Flojo viso
Capa banda binder
PA Oscaro wrapper and some with Equador maduro wrappers

Very nice looking sticks Charlie !
Where would you put that blend, mild to medium, medium ?
That Mata fina, do you consider it as a Ligero ?
Just ordered a few pounds of it and looking forward to use it !

Mata fina, when used as a ¼ to ½ leaf, does seem to give a flavor boost and nicotine boost similar to a Liguero, the flavor is different. It has a nice woody/Creamy taste, with a dark tobacco type fullness to it. I always keep this leaf in my arsenal of leaves to blend with, because it stands apart with a unique taste. I believe I've seen a post by Bob, where Mata Fina Puros sell for $25, so it is a quality leaf for sure.

I would like to add that I personally don't smoke this Puro style, because too much can be a bit dark/musky/bitter, I personally prefer it in a blend. Your flavor profile may be different, you might want to add more than say....me?

AZD -- I dunno how you use a quarter leaf of Mata Fina. The stuff I've seen, the leaves are so small that one whole leaf is less than half a typical filler leaf.

Do love the stuff. Just got in another pound. Trying it now, one leaf MF mixed with habano wrapper scraps, bound in sumatra, wrapped with habano. Gotta find some good use for all these wrapper scraps.

On the bigger leaves, cut the half, in half. On the smaller leaves toss in half. Yes, most are smaller, so a half leaf is appropriate. A whole leaf may be too much for some, but not all. Hmm....do you like the Dominican? I used a Dominican binder, Mata Fina, Habano Wrapper, and a little Piloto Cubano to bring out the creaminess. Sumatra may go better with other blends? Not sure, just got some myself. Let me know!

I have some other tobaccos that I'm playing around with right now, but am going to order more Braz. Mata Fina next week. Should be interesting!
